Role Description

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to join our healthcare team in the role of Accounting and Medical Billing Specialist. This position requires a unique blend of skills encompassing both accounting principles and medical billing procedures. The ideal candidate will be proficient in financial management, medical coding, and billing practices within the healthcare industry.

Key Responsibilities:

As the Accounting and Medical Billing Specialist, your role will include:

  • Maintain accurate financial records and ledgers for the healthcare facility.
  • Prepare and process invoices, payments, and financial transactions.
  • Reconcile accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.
Medical Billing:
  • Process and submit medical claims to insurance companies and government healthcare programs (e.g., OHIP) for reimbursement.
  • Verify patients’ insurance coverage and eligibility prior to billing.
  • Assign appropriate medical codes to procedures and diagnoses in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Review medical records and documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness for billing purposes.
  • Monitor the status of claims, follow up on unpaid or denied claims, and resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Stay up-to-date with healthcare billing regulations and compliance requirements, including privacy laws.
  • Ensure all billing and accounting practices comply with provincial healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Generate financial reports and billing analyses to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial metrics.
  • Prepare regular reports for management review and decision-making.
Customer Service:
  • Communicate with patients regarding their insurance coverage, billing inquiries, and payment arrangements in a professional and empathetic manner.
  • Address patient concerns or inquiries related to billing and financial matters.

Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks) and medical billing software.
  • Strong understanding of medical coding principles and reimbursement methodologies.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial record-keeping and billing documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment

  • This is a full-time position.
  • This position typically operates in a professional office environment within a healthcare facility.
  • Regular hours of work may include evenings and weekends to accommodate patient needs or billing deadlines.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training or professional development purposes.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in both accounting and medical billing roles, preferably within the healthcare industry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma in Accounting and/or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Additional certification in medical billing and/or accounting (e.g., Certified Professional Biller/Coder – CPB) is an asset.
